McVitie's Penguin bars are a classic British snack consisting of a chocolate-covered biscuit filled with chocolate cream. Originally created in 1932 by William Macdonald of MacDonald Biscuits in Glasgow, Scotland, the brand became a household name for its playful identity and the jokes printed on the wrappers.
The brand was acquired by United Biscuits in 1948 and eventually integrated under the McVitie's umbrella. Today, Penguin bars are primarily manufactured at the United Biscuits factory in Stockport, Greater Manchester. In 2014, United Biscuits was acquired by pladis Global, which is the snack subsidiary of the Turkish conglomerate Yıldız Holding. Consequently, while the brand remains quintessentially British in heritage and production, its ultimate ownership resides in Turkey.
