Kanthal is a world-renowned brand synonymous with high-quality resistance heating technology and industrial heating systems. Originally founded in Sweden in 1931 by Hans von Kantzow, the brand rose to prominence through the invention of the iron-chromium-aluminum (FeCrAl) alloy, which allowed for significantly higher operating temperatures than previous materials.
Over the decades, Kanthal has evolved through various corporate ownership structures. It was a long-standing part of the Sandvik Group, specifically within the Sandvik Materials Technology business area. As of 2022, following the spin-off of Sandvik Materials Technology into a separate public company known as Alleima, Kanthal remains a primary brand under the Alleima umbrella.
Today, Kanthal operates as a global leader, manufacturing its specialized alloys and heating elements across several continents to serve industrial furnaces, home appliances, and semiconductor manufacturing. Its headquarters and primary research and development facilities remain rooted in Hallstahammar, Sweden.
