The brand was founded by Ron Rice in Daytona Beach, Florida, inspired by the natural sun protective methods used by local people in Hawaii. Over several decades, the brand evolved from a small home-based operation into one of the most iconic labels in the sun protection industry, known for its distinctive tropical scent and coconut-based formulations.

In 2007, the brand was acquired by Playtex Products, Inc., which was subsequently purchased by Energizer Holdings. In 2015, Energizer spun off its personal care division into a new independent entity called Edgewell Personal Care. Today, Edgewell continues to manage and expand the Hawaiian Tropic portfolio, focusing on skin-nurturing formulas like the Silk Hydration line.
