Founded by the Hernández family in Monterrey, Mexico, the company originally began as a distributor of toiletries before transitioning into the food industry and becoming Mexico's leading producer of canned goods and authentic salsas.

Today, the brand is managed under a complex structure of partnerships. In Mexico, it is owned and operated by Grupo Herdez, a major public company headquartered in Mexico City. For the United States market, Herdez products are distributed through MegaMex Foods, a 50-50 joint venture between Grupo Herdez and the American food giant Hormel Foods. This partnership allows the brand to maintain its authentic Mexican roots while leveraging extensive distribution networks in North America.

Manufacturing takes place across multiple facilities in Mexico and the United States to serve its global consumer base. While the brand is famous for its Salsa Verde and Salsa Casera, it has expanded its portfolio to include beans, guacamole, and refrigerated entrées, solidifying its position as a staple of Mexican culinary tradition.
