Toblerone is one of the world's most recognizable confectionery brands, famous for its unique triangular shape and honey and almond nougat recipe. It was created in 1908 by Theodor Tobler and Emil Baumann in Bern, Switzerland. The name is a combination of the founder's surname, 'Tobler', and 'Torrone', the Italian word for honey and almond nougat. The iconic mountain-shaped design is often associated with the Matterhorn in the Swiss Alps, which long appeared on its packaging.
Historically, Toblerone was produced exclusively in the Swiss capital of Bern. However, following the brand's acquisition by the American multinational company Mondelez International, production strategies shifted. In 2023, Mondelez announced that it would move some of its manufacturing to Bratislava, Slovakia, to accommodate increased global demand and optimize costs. Due to strict 'Swissness' laws, which require products labeled as 'Swiss milk chocolate' to be manufactured entirely within Switzerland, the brand modernised its packaging recently to remove the Matterhorn imagery and the Swiss designation for bars produced outside the country.
Today, Toblerone is owned by Mondelez International, a global snack food powerhouse headquartered in Chicago, Illinois. Despite changes in manufacturing locations and branding regulations, Toblerone remains a premium global brand sold in duty-free shops and supermarkets worldwide. It continues to be celebrated as a pioneer of the Swiss chocolate tradition while evolving into a truly international chocolate icon.
