Ronhill is a prominent brand of cigarettes that holds a significant place in the tobacco market of Southeastern Europe. Originally launched in 1970, it became the most famous brand produced by TDR (Tvornica duhana Rovinj), a Croatian tobacco factory with a long-standing history dating back to the 19th century. The brand gained wide popularity across the former Yugoslavia due to its distinctive quality and marketing.
In 2015, British American Tobacco (BAT) acquired TDR, including the Ronhill brand, for 505 million euros. This acquisition transitioned the ownership from the Croatian conglomerate Adris Grupa to one of the world's largest multinational tobacco companies. Following the acquisition, BAT eventually rebranded Ronhill under the 'Dunhill' brand name in many markets to streamline its international portfolio, though the heritage of the product remains deeply rooted in its Croatian origins.
Today, while the manufacturing facilities in Kanfanar, Croatia, continue to operate as a vital part of BAT's European supply chain, the brand is managed under the strategic umbrella of British American Tobacco's global headquarters in London. This reflects the broader trend of consolidation in the global tobacco industry where local heritage brands are integrated into international brand families.
