Saab (Svenska Aeroplan Aktiebolaget) was founded in Sweden in 1937 as an aircraft manufacturer before diversifying into automobiles in 1945. The company became known worldwide for its innovative engineering and safety features, reflecting its aerospace heritage.
While Saab Automobiles AB was acquired by General Motors and later entered bankruptcy, the brand name currently has two distinct paths. The aerospace and defense company continues to operate independently as Saab AB. The automotive division assets were purchased by National Electric Vehicle Sweden (NEVS). As of 2026 and beyond, the automotive brand is non-operational for new vehicle production under the Saab name due to licensing restrictions, while the aerospace entity remains a global leader in defense technology.
