It was famously founded by the Simek family in Medford, Wisconsin, named after the Tombstone Tap tavern located across from a cemetery. The brand became a household name due to its distinct seasoning and 'What do you want on your Tombstone?' marketing campaign.

Over the decades, the brand's ownership shifted through major food conglomerates. It was acquired by Kraft Foods in 1986, which helped expand its distribution nationwide. In 2010, as part of a multi-billion dollar deal involving Kraft's frozen pizza division, the brand was sold to Nestlé. This transition placed Tombstone under the umbrella of one of the world's largest food and beverage companies, where it remains a staple of the North American frozen food aisle.
