TomTom was founded in Amsterdam, Netherlands, in 1991 by Harold Goddijn, Corinne Vigreux, Peter-Frans Pauwels, and Pieter Geelen. Originally named Palmtop Software, the company initially developed applications for business-to-business handheld computers before pivoting to consumer navigation software. In 2004, the release of the TomTom GO revolutionized the consumer market, establishing TomTom as a household name in portable navigation devices (PNDs).
TomTom products are designed and engineered primarily at their headquarters in Amsterdam and various R&D hubs across Europe and India. The physical manufacturing of their GPS hardware units is typically outsourced to specialized electronics manufacturing service providers in China and other parts of Asia. As the company has shifted its focus towards software-as-a-service (SaaS) and digital mapping, their manufacturing footprint now includes significant digital infrastructure and data center operations globaly.
TomTom remains an independent public company listed on the Euronext Amsterdam stock exchange (TOM2). Unlike many of its early competitors who were acquired by larger tech conglomerates, TomTom has maintained its autonomy. The company today focuses on four key business areas: Automotive, Enterprise, Maps, and Consumer. It provides advanced mapping technology and real-time traffic information to global automotive Tier 1 suppliers and major technology companies.
