Brand Origin and History

This image features two iconic spirits with distinct global origins. Kahlúa is a world-renowned coffee liqueur that originated in Veracruz, Mexico, in 1936. Formulated with local Arabica coffee beans and sugar cane rum, it represents a significant part of Mexican cocktail heritage. On the right is Absolut Vodka, which was established in 1879 by L.O. Smith in Åhus, Sweden. Absolut revolutionized the vodka industry with its continuous distillation process and iconic apothecary-style bottle design.

Manufacturing and Global Presence

Kahlúa is primarily produced in Mexico, specifically keeping its roots in the Veracruz region where the coffee and spirits are sourced and blended. Absolut Vodka is primarily produced in Sweden, maintaining a strict 'one source' philosophy where every drop of Absolut produced globally comes from the distillery in Åhus using Swedish winter wheat. Both products are exported to nearly every market worldwide.

Ownership and Corporate Structure

Both Kahlúa and Absolut Vodka are currently owned by Pernod Ricard, a French multinational spirits giant. Absolut was acquired by Pernod Ricard in 2008 when the Swedish government sold the state-owned V&S Group. Kahlúa joined the portfolio earlier, through the acquisition of Allied Domecq. As of 2024 and looking toward the future, Pernod Ricard remains the ultimate owner, managing these brands through various local subsidiaries globally, such as The Absolut Company AB in Sweden and Pernod Ricard Mexico.
