Elocon is a well-known brand of mometasone furoate, a medium-potency topical corticosteroid used to treat inflammatory skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis. The brand was originally developed by Schering-Plough, an American pharmaceutical company founded in 1971 through a merger between Schering Corporation and Plough, Inc. Following a massive corporate acquisition in 2009, Schering-Plough was integrated into Merck & Co. (known as MSD outside the U.S. and Canada).
In 2021, Merck spun off several of its legacy brands, women’s health products, and biosimilars into a new independent, publicly traded company called Organon & Co. As a result, Elocon is now part of the Organon portfolio. While the brand has American roots, its manufacturing is global, with production facilities located in various regions including Europe and Asia to serve international markets. The ultimate ownership remains with Organon & Co., which is headquartered in Jersey City, New Jersey, USA.
