Salomon was founded in 1947 in the heart of the French Alps by François Salomon and his family. Originally a workshop for making ski edges, the brand quickly evolved into a leading innovator in mountain sports equipment, including ski bindings and boots. Over the decades, Salomon expanded its reach into hiking, trail running, and mountain lifestyle apparel, becoming a globally recognized name in high-performance outdoor gear.
The manufacturing process for Salomon products is distributed across various global locations to balance technical precision and production scale. While initial design and high-end engineering often take place at the 'Annecy Design Center' in France, the actual mass manufacturing of footwear, apparel, and hardware occurs in multiple countries, including Vietnam, China, and Romania.
In terms of ownership, Salomon has undergone several major corporate transitions. It was acquired by Adidas in 1997 and later sold in 2005 to Amer Sports, a Finnish sporting goods company. Today, Amer Sports—and consequently Salomon—is owned by a consortium led by the Chinese sportswear giant Anta Sports. Despite this international ownership, the brand remains deeply rooted in its French heritage, maintaining its headquarters and primary design hub in Annecy, France.
