Originally launched in the United Kingdom in 1989 by Rupert Murdoch's News International, it grew to become Europe's leading media and entertainment provider. The brand expanded significantly across several European markets including Ireland, Italy, Germany, and Austria.

While Sky is a service-based brand, its hardware such as set-top boxes (Sky Q, Sky Glass) is manufactured in various locations, primarily in Asia. In 2018, the brand underwent a major ownership shift when Comcast Corporation outbid Disney and 21st Century Fox to acquire the company. Today, Sky operates as a subsidiary of the American telecommunications giant Comcast, maintaining its headquarters in London while benefiting from global corporate integration.
