Hovis is one of Britain's most iconic heritage brands, synonymous with traditional baking and the history of bread in the United Kingdom. Founded in 1886 by Richard 'Stoney' Smith, the brand was built on a patented method for milling wheat germ into flour, which led to the creation of the Smith's Patent Germ Flour. This was later renamed 'Hovis' following a national competition to find a name, derived from the Latin 'Hominis Vis' meaning 'strength of man'.
Today, Hovis products are primarily produced across a network of bakeries and mills in the United Kingdom and Northern Ireland, maintaining its status as a staple in British households. The brand has transitioned through various owners over the years, most notably being part of Premier Foods. As of 2020, Hovis Ltd was acquired by the private equity firm Endless LLP, ensuring its continued operation as an independent British business headquartered in High Wycombe.
