Sharp is a historic brand that represents over a century of Japanese engineering and innovation. Founded in 1912 by Tokuji Hayakawa, the brand first gained worldwide fame with the invention of the 'Ever-Ready Sharp Pencil,' which eventually became the namesake for the corporation. Over the decades, the brand became a titan in the global electronics market, pioneered the mass production of liquid crystal displays (LCDs) and solar cells.
In recent years, the ownership structure of the brand has undergone significant shifts. Following a high-profile acquisition in 2016, the brand is now under the majority control of Foxconn, a Taiwanese multinational electronics contract manufacturer. While the brand maintains its headquarters and deep experimental roots in Japan, much of its large-scale manufacturing now takes place across multiple international sites, particularly in China and Southeast Asia, to serve global logistics networks.
Today, the Sharp brand is managed through various regional subsidiaries and joint ventures. In many western markets, including Europe, the brand name is licensed or managed by specific entities such as Skytec UMCM to handle the distribution of televisions and audio equipment, while the central corporation continues to focus on business solutions and high-end display technologies.
