Balconi is a well-known Italian brand specializing in the production of sponge cake-based snacks and biscuits. Founded in 1953 by Michele Balconi as an artisanal pastry shop in Milan, the company grew into a major industrial player.
The product shown is a 'Crostatina', a traditional Italian shortcrust pastry tartlet filled with apricot jam. It remains a staple of Italian breakfast and snacking culture. While the brand emphasizes its Milanese origins, its primary production facilities are located in Nerviano, Italy.
In terms of ownership, Balconi underwent significant changes in the 2010s. In 2015, the Irish food group Valeo Foods acquired a majority stake in the company from the Italian private equity firm Clessidra. Consequently, while the production and brand identity remain deeply rooted in Italy, the ultimate ownership lies with Valeo Foods, which is headquartered in Dublin, Ireland, and is itself owned by the global investment firm Bain Capital.
