Homey is a premier smart home platform and hardware line originally developed by the Dutch technology company Athom B.V. Founded in 2014 by Emile Nijssen and Stefan Witkamp following a successful Kickstarter campaign, the brand established itself as a privacy-centric, versatile alternative to mainstream smart home ecosystems. Homey is designed to unify thousands of devices from different brands—such as Philips Hue, Sonos, and IKEA—using various protocols like Zigbee, Z-Wave, Wi-Fi, and Matter into a single, user-friendly interface.

In a significant industry shift in July 2024, the global electronics giant LG Electronics acquired an 80% stake in Athom B.V., with plans to fully acquire the remaining 20% over the following three years. This acquisition was aimed at integrating Homey's advanced interoperability and software expertise into LG's broader 'ThinQ' ecosystem. Despite the change in ownership, Homey continues to operate as an independent brand with its headquarters remaining in Enschede, Netherlands.

Manufacturing of Homey hardware, including the Homey Pro and Homey Bridge, involves a global supply chain. While the initial development and assembly occurred within the Netherlands, large-scale production for global distribution now utilizes specialized electronics manufacturing facilities across Multiple countries to meet international demand.
