Becel is a well-known brand of margarine and vegetable-based spreads, originally developed by Unilever in the 1960s with a focus on heart health. The name itself is derived from the initials 'BCL' (Blood Cholesterol Lowering). Originally founded in the Netherlands, the brand has been a staple in European kitchens for decades.
In 2018, Unilever sold its spreads division to KKR, a global investment firm, which led to the creation of Upfield. Upfield is now the world's leading producer of plant-based spreads and cheeses. While the brand has its roots in Dutch innovation, Becel products sold in the Benelux region are primarily manufactured in the Netherlands, while other versions (often branded as Flora or ProActiv) are produced in various facilities across Europe to meet regional demand.
