Göteborgs Kex Smörgåsrån is a classic Swedish wafer product that has been baked since 1935. Originally founded in Kungälv, Sweden, the brand has deep roots in Swedish culinary culture, known for its light and crispy texture.
In recent years, the production of these iconic wafers was moved from the historic Kungälv factory to a modern production facility in Riga, Latvia. This move was part of a larger consolidation strategy by the brand's owner to centralize biscuit production.
The brand is currently owned by Orkla, a leading Norwegian industrial conglomerate that acquired the company to expand its portfolio of Nordic consumer goods brands. While the products are still developed specifically for the Swedish market, the manufacturing and ultimate corporate ownership are now spread across the Baltics and Norway.
