Shell is one of the world's most recognizable energy brands, with a history dating back to 1833 when Marcus Samuel senior began an antiques and seashell import business in London. His sons later transitioned the firm into the oil trade, commissioning the first oil tanker to pass through the Suez Canal in 1892. In 1897, they established the 'Shell' Transport and Trading Company. To compete with American giants like Standard Oil, the company merged with the Royal Dutch Petroleum Company in 1907 to form the Royal Dutch Shell Group.
Historically, the brand operated under a dual-headed structure with headquarters in both London and The Hague. However, in early 2022, the company underwent a major corporate simplification, officially changing its name to Shell plc and consolidating its headquarters entirely in London, United Kingdom. As of 2026, Shell remains a British multinational public limited company and continues to be a dominant force in the global energy market.
Manufacturing of Shell's motor oils and lubricants occurs globally across dozens of countries, utilizing a vast network of refineries and blending plants. Major production hubs include the Pernis refinery in the Netherlands (Europe's largest), as well as significant facilities in the United States (notably through its subsidiary Shell USA based in Houston), Germany, Singapore, and various locations across Asia and Africa. This widespread manufacturing base allows Shell to serve local markets efficiently while maintaining global quality standards for its iconic 'Pecten' branded products.
