Ampol is an iconic Australian petroleum brand with a history dating back to the mid-20th century. Originally standing for the Australian Motorists Petrol Company, it was founded in 1936 to provide a home-grown alternative to foreign oil interests. Over the decades, the brand became synonymous with Australian motoring culture.
Following a significant merger with Caltex Australia in 1995, the Ampol brand was largely phased out in favor of the Caltex nameplate under a licensing agreement with Chevron. However, in 2020, following the termination of the license agreement to use the Caltex brand, the company underwent a major rebranding initiative to return to its roots, transitioning all its sites back to the Ampol name.
Today, Ampol Limited is a publicly-traded company listed on the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX). It operates as a fully independent Australian entity, managing a vast network of service stations, refineries, and distribution assets. The company remains the largest fuel supplier in Australia, maintaining a strong domestic identity while expanding its reach into international markets such as New Zealand through its acquisition of Z Energy.
