Foyles is one of the most storied names in British bookselling, synonymous with literary history in London. Founded in 1903 by brothers William and Gilbert Foyle, the brand began after the pair failed their civil service exams and decided to sell their unwanted textbooks. This kitchen-table venture grew into a world-famous flagship store on Charing Cross Road, which was once renowned for its eccentric management and the 'Byzantine' payment systems overseen by the legendary Christina Foyle.
For over a century, Foyles remained a family-owned icon of independent retail. However, in 2018, the company was acquired by Waterstones, the UK’s largest book retailer. Despite the change in ownership, the Foyles brand identity has been carefully preserved, maintaining its distinct name and reputation for expertise. Today, the brand operates as a specialist subsidiary under the broader corporate umbrella of Elliott Advisors, which manages Waterstones through its portfolio of retail investments.
