Smith's is a historic Australian snack brand, often referred to as 'Australia's Favorite' potato chip. The brand was founded in 1931 by Frank Smith and George Ensor in Sydney, using locally grown potatoes to establish a snack food legacy in the region. Today, Smith's chips are still primarily manufactured in Australia, specifically in facilities in New South Wales and Queensland, utilizing 100% Australian-grown potatoes.
Over the decades, the brand underwent various ownership changes, eventually becoming part of The Smith's Snackfood Company. In 1998, it was acquired by the global beverages and snacks giant PepsiCo. As of 2024 and beyond, Smith's remains a core part of the PepsiCo portfolio, operating under the Frito-Lay international division, which manages the production and distribution of many of the world's most recognizable snack brands.
