Sagres is one of Portugal's most iconic beverage brands, founded in 1940 by the Central de Cervejas e Bebidas (Centralcer) in Vila Franca de Xira. The brand was named after the town of Sagres to commemorate the historic Portuguese maritime discoveries and the legendary school of navigation.
Throughout its history, Sagres has maintained a dominant position in the Portuguese market. In 2008, the parent company Sociedade Central de Cervejas (SCC) was acquired by the Dutch brewing giant Heineken N.V. Today, Sagres is manufactured primarily at the Vialonga brewery in Portugal. Under Heineken's ownership, the brand has expanded its international footprint, being exported to many countries while maintaining its status as a quintessential Portuguese cultural icon.
