Founded in 2008 in San Francisco, Airbnb has revolutionized the short-term rental market by allowing individuals to host travelers in their own homes. The platform was created by Brian Chesky, Nathan Blecharczyk, and Joe Gebbia, born out of the idea of renting out an air mattress in their apartment to pay rent.
As a digital platform, it does not have traditional manufacturing; however, its server infrastructure and software development are managed globally, primarily from the United States. Airbnb remains an independent, publicly traded company since its IPO in 2020, continuing to operate as the ultimate owner of its brand and various proprietary technologies that facilitate peer-to-peer lodging and tourism experiences across nearly every country in the world.
