Papel higiénico is the generic Spanish term for toilet paper, a fundamental hygiene product used globally. While the use of paper for hygiene dates back to 6th-century China, the modern commercial version was pioneered in the United States. Joseph Gayetty is credited with inventing the first packaged toilet paper in 1857, while the Scott Paper Company popularized the roll format we recognize today starting in the late 19th century.
Because 'Papel higiénico' is a descriptive term rather than a single brand, it is manufactured in virtually every country by thousands of different companies. Major global players in the industry include multinational corporations like Kimberly-Clark (USA), Procter & Gamble (USA), and Essity (Sweden), alongside massive regional producers such as Suzano in Brazil. The product is typically made from wood pulp or recycled paper fibers at local or regional paper mills to minimize shipping costs of the bulky rolls.
