Bertolli is one of the world's most iconic olive oil brands, originally founded in 1865 by Francesco Bertolli and his wife Caterina in Lucca, Tuscany, Italy. What started as a small grocery store selling regional produce and olive oil eventually grew into a global pioneer for Italian food exports.
Today, the brand operates under a dual ownership structure. The olive oil business, which includes the Bertolli Brat Olivenöl (specifically marketed in German-speaking regions for high-heat frying), is owned by Deoleo, a Spanish multinational. While the brand maintains its Italian heritage, the oils are often blends sourced from multiple countries, including Spain, Italy, Greece, and Tunisia, to ensure consistent quality and flavor profiles.
The brand has changed hands several times in its history, having been owned by Unilever for many decades before being divested. The Deoleo Group now manages the global olive oil portfolio, maintaining Bertolli's status as a leader in the Mediterranean food category.
