Bertolli, founded in 1865 in Lucca, Tuscany, by Francesco Bertolli, is one of the world's most recognized Italian-inspired brands. Originally established as a small grocery shop selling olive oil, it grew into an international powerhouse. Over the decades, the brand's ownership has been split across different product categories. While the olive oil business is owned by Deoleo, the margarines and spreads business (as seen in the image) was historically part of Unilever's spreads division.
In 2018, Unilever sold its global spreads business, including Bertolli spreads, to KKR, which established the company Upfield. Upfield now serves as the ultimate owner of the Bertolli spreads brand. Manufacturing occurs in multiple locations across Europe to serve various regional markets, including facilities in Germany and the Netherlands, maintaining the brand's heritage of using Mediterranean ingredients such as olive oil in a convenient spreadable format.
