Philadelphia, often colloquially known as Philly, is one of the world's most recognized cream cheese brands. Despite its name, the brand originated in New York in 1872 when dairyman William Lawrence developed a way to make cream cheese using a combination of cream and milk. He named it Philadelphia because, at the time, Philadelphia was known for its high-quality dairy products.
For the Canadian market, the product is primarily manufactured within Canada to ensure freshness and meet local dairy regulations. The brand underwent a significant corporate split in 2012; currently, ownership is divided by geography. In North America (Canada and the United States), the brand is owned and operated by Kraft Heinz. Internationally, in most other regions like Europe, it is owned by Mondelez International. This specific packaging is the Canadian version, identifying it as a 'Cream Cheese Product' to comply with local labeling laws regarding fat content in processed dairy.
