Carcassonne is a world-renowned tile-placement board game named after the medieval fortified town in southern France. It was designed by Klaus-Jürgen Wrede and first published in 2000. The game is specifically known for its tile-based mechanics where players build a landscape of cities, roads, and fields to score points.

The game's origin is firmly rooted in Germany, where it was originally published by Hans im Glück. Manufacturing for the core European and many international editions continues to take place in Germany to ensure high quality for the wooden components and cardboard tiles. Over the years, the brand has seen various expansions and 'Big Box' compilations which bundle several expansions together with the base game.

Ownership of the Carcassonne brand has shifted through industry consolidation. Since 2014, the original publisher Hans im Glück has operated under the umbrella of Asmodee, which was later acquired by the Swedish gaming conglomerate Embracer Group. As of 2024 and looking toward 2026, Embracer Group remains the ultimate owner company, managing a vast portfolio of tabletop and digital gaming intellectual properties globally.
