Tchibo is one of Germany's most iconic coffee brands, founded in 1949 by Max Herz and Carl Tchiling-Hiryan in Hamburg. The brand name itself is a portmanteau of the name 'Tchiling' and 'Bohne' (German for bean). While initially starting as a mail-order coffee service, it has evolved into a massive multi-channel retailer known not only for high-quality roasted coffee but also for its rotating weekly non-food collections.
Today, the brand is owned by Maxingvest ag, the holding company of the Herz family. While Tchibo sources its coffee beans from various tropical regions worldwide (such as Brazil, Vietnam, and Ethiopia), the roasting and packaging primarily occur in Germany, notably at its production sites in Hamburg and Berlin. The brand maintains a strong commitment to sustainability through various certifications and local sourcing initiatives.
