Skyscanner was founded in 2003 in Edinburgh, Scotland, by Gareth Williams, Barry Smith, and Bonamy Grimes. Its creation was sparked by the founders' frustration with the difficulty of searching multiple airline websites to find the cheapest flights. Since its inception, the platform has grown into a global travel search engine providing price comparisons for flights, hotels, and car rentals.
In 2016, Skyscanner was acquired by the Chinese travel giant Trip.com Group (formerly Ctrip) for approximately £1.4 billion. Despite the change in ownership, the brand continues to operate independently with its primary operational headquarters remaining in Edinburgh, UK. Today, it serves millions of travelers worldwide, utilizing advanced data scraping and API integrations to provide comprehensive travel options.
