Bissell, formally known as Bissell Inc. or Bissell Homecare, is a premier American brand with a legacy spanning nearly 150 years. Founded in 1876 by Melville R. Bissell and his wife Anna in Grand Rapids, Michigan, the company was born out of a practical need to clean sawdust from their family crockery shop. This led to the invention of the first successful mechanical carpet sweeper, a device that revolutionized home maintenance.

Following Melville's death in 1889, Anna Bissell took the helm, becoming the first female CEO in the United States. Under her leadership, the company expanded internationally, eventually earning the patronage of Queen Victoria. Today, the company remains a private, family-owned entity, managed by the fifth generation of the Bissell family. Its global headquarters is located in Walker, Michigan.

While originally manufactured in the United States, modern Bissell products are now produced in various international locations to serve a global market. Manufacturing primarily takes place in China and Malaysia, though the company maintains a significant corporate and research presence in Michigan. Bissell is also widely recognized for its commitment to animal welfare through the Bissell Pet Foundation, which is supported by a portion of every product sale.
