Caprice des Dieux is an iconic specialty cheese recognized by its unique oval shape and blue packaging. It was first created in 1956 in the Haute-Marne region of France by Jean-Noël Bongrain. The cheese is a soft-ripened, double-cream variety with a bloomy rind, known for its smooth texture and mild, creamy flavor.
Production remains concentrated in France, predominantly at the Illoud creamery where it originated. The brand belongs to the Savencia Fromage & Dairy group (formerly known as Bongrain SA), which has grown into a global leader in the dairy sector. The company remains headquartered in Viroflay, France, and is still largely controlled by the Bongrain family.
