OnePlus was established in December 2013 by Pete Lau and Carl Pei as a high-end, enthusiast-focused smartphone brand under the 'Never Settle' philosophy. Originally positioned as a disruptive startup, the company has always maintained deep ties with the Chinese electronics giant OPPO. While it initially operated with a high degree of autonomy, OnePlus began a formal 'merger' or closer integration with OPPO in 2021 to streamline research, development, and supply chain operations.
Manufacturing for OnePlus primarily occurs in China, specifically in the Guangdong province (Shenzhen and Dongguan). However, to serve the Indian market and comply with local regulations, a significant portion of its devices are assembled in India at facilities in Noida and Andhra Pradesh. Historically part of the BBK Electronics collective, OnePlus is currently a subsidiary of OPPO, which is ultimately owned by Guangdong OPlus Holdings. In 2026, the brand continues to expand its ecosystem into tablets and audio while navigating a shifting global strategy that emphasizes closer operational alignment with its parent company.
