Toblerone is a globally recognized chocolate brand characterized by its unique triangular prism shape and distinct honey and almond nougat recipe. Created in 1908 by Theodor Tobler and Emil Baumann in Bern, Switzerland, the name is a portmanteau of Tobler's name and 'torrone', the Italian word for nougat. For over a century, the brand was exclusively manufactured in Bern, cementing its identity as a quintessentially Swiss product.
In recent years, the brand's production landscape has shifted. Following its acquisition by the American multinational Mondelēz International, a portion of the manufacturing was moved to Bratislava, Slovakia, to accommodate increased global demand and efficiency. Due to Swiss regulations regarding the use of national imagery (the Swissness Act), the removal of some Swiss-made labeling occurred as production expanded outside of Switzerland. To this day, Toblerone remains a flagship brand in the Mondelēz portfolio, enjoying a presence in duty-free shops and retail outlets worldwide.
