OPI, originally established as Odontorium Products Inc., began its journey in 1981 as a dental supply company in California. The brand transitioned into the nail care industry when founders George Schaeffer and Suzi Weiss-Fischmann recognized the chemical similarities between dental materials and nail acrylics. This pivot led to the creation of what is now the world's leading professional nail lacquer brand, famous for its chip-resistant formulas and iconic shade names.

While the brand was founded and headquartered in Southern California, its manufacturing footprint underwent a major shift in 2016. Following its earlier acquisition by Coty Inc., production and distribution were consolidated at a major manufacturing facility in Sanford, North Carolina. The brand also utilizes international supply chains to maintain its presence in over 100 countries globally.

In terms of ownership, OPI has moved through significant corporate transitions. After being held by Coty from 2010 to 2020, a majority stake in the brand was sold to the global investment firm KKR. As part of this deal, OPI became a key subsidiary of the Wella Company. As of 2026, the Wella Company remains the ultimate owner, operating as a standalone beauty entity with its global strategic command center located in Geneva, Switzerland.
