Founded by Mike Sinyard in 1974, the company began by importing high-end Italian components before revolutionizing the market with the introduction of the first production mountain bike, the Stumpjumper.

Today, Specialized is a global leader in cycling innovation, headquartered in Morgan Hill, California. While the brand's research, design, and engineering take place in the United States, the manufacturing of its frames and many components is concentrated in Taiwan and Vietnam. While founder Mike Sinyard remains deeply involved, the Taiwanese manufacturer Merida Bikes holds a significant minority stake (approximately 49%) in the company. This long-standing partnership ensures a seamless integration between Specialized's California-based designs and Merida's advanced production facilities, allowing the brand to push the boundaries of aerodynamics and performance across road, mountain, and electric bike categories.
