Ballerina is one of Sweden's most iconic and beloved biscuit brands, first launched in 1960. Recognisable by its circular shape and distinct cocoa-flavoured filling, it has become a staple of Scandinavian 'fika' culture. The brand was originally created by the Swedish confectionery company Göteborgs Kex, which was founded in Kungälv in 1888.
Historically and primarily, Ballerina biscuits are manufactured at the Göteborgs Kex bakery in Kungälv, Sweden. The product is famous for its combination of a light vanilla-flavoured biscuit and a darker cocoa biscuit joined by a smooth chocolate-nougat cream. Over the decades, the range has expanded to include various flavours like peanut butter, brownie, and strawberry, though the original remains the market leader in Sweden.
Today, the Ballerina brand is owned by the Orkla Group, a leading Norwegian industrial conglomerate. Orkla acquired Göteborgs Kex as part of its broad expansion into the Nordic consumer goods market. While the brand maintains its deep Swedish roots and local production heritage, it is now managed under the Orkla Confectionery & Snacks division, which oversees its distribution across the Nordic and Baltic regions.
