Lipton Ice Tea, originally introduced in some markets as Liptonice, is an iconic global beverage brand with a heritage rooted in the late 19th century. The brand began with Thomas Lipton, who sought to make tea accessible and affordable to all. Over time, the brand evolved from traditional tea leaves into the ready-to-drink (RTD) format that is now a staple in supermarkets and convenience stores worldwide.
The production of Lipton Ice Tea is a global affair, with manufacturing facilities located in various regions including Europe, North America, and Asia to serve local markets efficiently. The brand's ownership structure is a notable example of a long-standing corporate partnership. Since the early 1990s, the RTD iced tea products have been managed by the Pepsi-Lipton Tea Partnership, a joint venture between PepsiCo and Unilever.
In a significant shift in 2022, Unilever sold its tea division, Ekaterra (now known as LIPTON Teas and Infusions), to the private equity firm CVC Capital Partners. While LIPTON Teas and Infusions manages the core tea leaf business, the ready-to-drink Lipton Ice Tea brand remains a pivotal part of the global joint venture with PepsiCo, combining the tea expertise of Lipton with the distribution and marketing power of PepsiCo.
