O2 is a leading telecommunications brand originally established in the United Kingdom. It was founded in 2001 after being spun off from the mobile division of BT (British Telecom), originally operating under the name BT Cellnet. Since its inception, O2 has grown into one of the largest mobile network operators in Europe, known for its high-quality network coverage and customer-centric digital services.

In terms of ownership, the brand underwent a significant transition in 2005 when it was acquired by the Spanish telecommunications giant Telefónica. However, a major structural change occurred in 2021 when Telefónica and Liberty Global completed a joint venture to merge O2 with Virgin Media. This merger created Virgin Media O2, a heavyweight in the British market that provides a comprehensive range of mobile, broadband, and television services.

Today, O2 remains a flagship brand under the Virgin Media O2 umbrella. While the brand is strictly British in its operational focus and headquarters, its ultimate ownership is split between its two parent corporations based in Spain and the United States/Bermuda.
