Burton Snowboards was founded in 1977 by Jake Burton Carpenter in Londonderry, Vermont. Driven by a passion for the 'Snurfer,' a precursor to the modern snowboard, Carpenter spent years refining board designs, bindings, and boots, ultimately playing a critical role in transforming snowboarding from a niche backyard hobby into a global Olympic sport. The brand is widely regarded as a pioneer in the industry, responsible for numerous technical innovations that define modern snow sports.
Unlike many of its competitors who have been acquired by large sporting conglomerates, Burton remains a privately held, family-owned company. Following the passing of Jake Burton Carpenter in 2019, the brand continues to be owned by the Carpenter family, with Donna Carpenter serving as the chair of the board. Headquartered in Burlington, Vermont, the company maintains a strong commitment to environmental sustainability and social impact through its B Corp certification.
While Burton captures the spirit of the Green Mountains in Vermont, its manufacturing operations are global in scale. Although some high-end prototyping and limited-edition production take place at 'Craig’s' (their Vermont-based R&D facility), the majority of bulk production for boards, softgoods, and outerwear is distributed across factories in Austria, China, and Vietnam. This global network allows the brand to maintain high technical standards while meeting worldwide demand.
