Last.fm is a pioneering music website that was founded in the United Kingdom in 2002. It is best known for its 'Scrobbling' system, which tracks the music users listen to across various platforms to build a detailed profile of their musical tastes and provide personalized recommendations and social charts.
Originally starting as an internet radio station and music community site, it was acquired by the American media giant CBS Corporation in 2007 for approximately $280 million. Following the merger of CBS and Viacom, the brand became part of the ViacomCBS portfolio, which was subsequently rebranded as Paramount Global.
Today, Last.fm operates as a subsidiary of Paramount Streaming, a division of Paramount Global. While its social community features remain a core part of its identity, it has evolved into a comprehensive music data and recommendation engine that continues to serve millions of music enthusiasts globally.
