Founded in France in 1986 by Pierre-André Senizergues, it was the first skateboarder-owned and operated global action sports footwear company. The brand revolutionized skate shoes by introducing the 'Natas' model, the first pro model skate shoe, and has since maintained a high reputation for durability and technical performance.

While the brand was born in France, it quickly established its headquarters in Lake Forest, California, to be at the heart of the skateboarding industry. Ownership of the brand is under Sole Technology, Inc., an American company that also houses other well-known skate brands like Emerica and éS. Today, Etnies products are manufactured across various global locations, primarily in Asia (including Vietnam and China), to supply its international market while maintaining its heritage in California's skate culture.
