Founded in 1936 by Tuomas Vohlonen, Suunto has a storied history as a pioneer in precision instruments, beginning with the mass production of liquid-filled compasses. Over the decades, the brand evolved from making field compasses to becoming a leading innovator in dive computers and premium multi-sport GPS watches. Headquartered in Vantaa, Finland, the brand is widely recognized for its Nordic design and commitment to environmental sustainability.
Traditionally, Suunto has distinguished itself by maintaining a high degree of domestic production, with its high-end flagship watches still being handcrafted and manufactured in Finland. However, some lower-tier models and components are manufactured in China to remain competitive in the global electronics market. In early 2022, a major corporate shift occurred when the long-time owner, Amer Sports, sold Suunto to Liesheng, a Chinese technology company specializing in wearable electronics. This acquisition has integrated Suunto into a broader technology ecosystem while maintaining the brand's Finnish design heritage and core testing facilities in Vantaa.
