Protopic is a topical pharmaceutical product containing tacrolimus monohydrate, primarily used to treat moderate to severe atopic dermatitis. The brand was originally developed by the Japanese pharmaceutical company Fujisawa Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd., which later merged with Yamanouchi Pharmaceutical to form Astellas Pharma Inc.
Manufacturing of Protopic often takes place at specialized facilities in Ireland (specifically Killorglin) to supply global markets. However, the distribution rights and marketing authorizations vary by region. In Europe, LEO Pharma A/S, a Danish pharmaceutical company founded in 1908, acquired the rights to several dermatological products from Astellas, including Protopic. This transition established LEO Pharma as the current brand owner and distributor for the European market, as indicated by the Danish address on the packaging.
