Ampeg is a legendary name in the world of music, particularly renowned for its deep impact on bass guitar amplification. Founded in 1946 by Everett Hull and Stanley Michaels as 'Michaels-Hull Electronic Labs,' the company was later renamed Ampeg, a portfolio of the 'Amplified Peg'—an invention Hull created for the upright bass. The brand became an industry standard with the introduction of the Portaflex and the powerhouse SVT (Super Valve Technology) stacks used by bands like the Rolling Stones.

Manufacturing and Ownership Evolution

Historically, Ampeg products were manufactured in the United States (specifically Linden, New Jersey, and later St. Louis, Missouri, under St. Louis Music). In the 21st century, production moved largely to Asia to meet global demand, though several high-end 'Heritage' series models continue to be assembled in the USA.

Following a period of ownership by Loud Technologies (now LOUD Audio, LLC), Ampeg was acquired in 2018 by the Yamaha Guitar Group, a subsidiary of the Japanese giant Yamaha Corporation. This move has allowed Ampeg to benefit from Yamaha's extensive R&D and global distribution network while maintaining its signature vintage-inspired sound and aesthetic.
