Founded in 1980 south of Munich, Germany, Ortovox began by revolutionizing mountain safety with the development of the first double-frequency avalanche transceiver. Since its inception, the brand has grown from a specialized safety equipment manufacturer into a premium provider of wool-based mountain apparel and technical backpacks, focusing heavily on sustainability and high-performance mountain sports.
Today, Ortovox products are manufactured globally. While technical components and final assembly of some safety devices have historical roots in Germany, much of their high-end wool clothing is produced in Europe and Asia, adhering to the Ortovox Wool Promise (OWP) standards. Since 2011, the brand has been a part of the Schwan-STABILO Group, ensuring long-term financial stability and global distribution reach while maintaining its identity as a mountain-safety pioneer.
