Originally founded in 1974 by Frank van Wezel in Shoeburyness, England, the brand gained fame for creating the world's first lightweight squash shoe. Since then, it has transitioned into a leader in hiking and lifestyle footwear, known for balancing technical performance with affordability.

While the brand originated in the United Kingdom, its manufacturing has expanded globally over decades to meet international demand. Today, Hi-Tec products are primarily manufactured in specialist factories across Asia, including China, Vietnam, and Indonesia. Ownership of the brand shifted in 2016 when it was acquired by the American brand management firm, Cherokee Inc., which later rebranded to Apex Global Brands. In 2021, the parent company was further acquired by Galaxy Universal LLC, a New York-based firm specializing in global footwear brand management, ensuring the brand's continued presence in the global retail market.
