Founded in 1961, it has grown from a local supplier into the country's market leader in the poultry sector.

While the brand remains quintessentially New Zealander in its heritage and manufacturing—operating various hatcheries, farms, and processing plants across the North and South Islands—its ownership has undergone several shifts. Originally established by Tegel Foods, it was owned by several international private equity firms before being acquired by a major international food conglomerate.

Currently, Tegel is owned by Bounty Fresh, a massive poultry enterprise based in the Philippines. This acquisition allows Tegel to leverage global logistical networks while maintaining its strict New Zealand-based quality standards and local production facilities.
